Turning Plastic Scrap into Marine Habitats

Updated: Jan 7

At Petroflex, an Arcane Industries company, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Our Gainesville, Texas, facility has teamed up with Pond King Inc. to create artificial fish habitats using recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit scrap from our extrusion operations. These habitats, placed in Lake Conroe near Houston, offer an eco-friendly solution to both recycling challenges and aquatic ecosystem restoration.

The artificial reefs, branded as Honey Hole Trees, provide essential benefits for fish populations. By mimicking natural vegetation, these structures offer a safe space for fish to hide, feed, and spawn, supporting healthy ecosystems. Unlike traditional brush piles that degrade quickly, the durable HDPE material ensures these habitats will last for decades, promoting sustainable game fish populations for generations of anglers.

Petroflex takes pride in grinding, washing, and pelletizing HDPE remnants in-house for this partnership. For the Lake Conroe project, over 11,000 feet of recycled conduit—more than 800 pounds—were transformed into 40 habitat units. This process exemplifies our commitment to reducing waste and maximizing resource reuse.

This project earned the Plastics Pipe Institute’s 2024 Project of the Year award, a testament to our commitment in sustainability. Petroflex is further expanding these efforts by exploring initiatives like Operation Blue and Operation Clean Sweep to set even higher standards in recycling and environmental responsibility.
